Two (half) days in the Rhodo-project

Monday 2008, Jan 7 and Tuesday Jan 8 I worked again in the Rhodo-project.

Monday:
1/2 hr. with Shindaiwo weedeater. About 30 m2 in the rhodo-project.
1 hr. with Husqvarna weedeater. About 100 m2 outside the rhodo-project.
1/2 hr. with Shindaiwo weedeater: Blackberries and sedges in the front.

Saw a stoat again. And a kingfisher diving in the water, while I was drinking my tea.

Forgot my rake.

Sunny with some clouds.

Made an entry at wiki-en on Jasminum polyanthum, the pink jasmin.

Tuesday:
Took my rake now! First I did 1 hour raking in front of the Rhodo-project and 1 hr in the Rhodo-part itself. Then 1/2 hr. Blackberry with the Shindaiwo scrub cutter in the front part. All the blackberries are mown now!
There came two kingfishers sitting on the fence to celebrate this.
Now just maintain it. And find out how much time that takes!
Then 1 hr light mowing with the Husqvarna in the Rhodo-project. Mowed again what Wilma had started last week (beside the willows) and widened the mowed stretch along the Rhodo’s in the direction of the east fence with about 1 mtr.
Here too, most of the (first) mowing is done now. This needs to be maintained too, of course.

Took some photo’s of a plant, that might be a kind of broomrape.

It was a cloudy day. It started raining at about 02:00pm and it did not stop before dark.

Made a quickie at wiki-en on Gunnera tinctoria, the Chilean rhubarb.

Creeping and climbing Jasmine in Isobel’s Garden

Another specimen of arrears in maintenance. Wilma had detected it already. I had seen it before with a half eye (as we say in Dutch). But last week I came to realise how serious it is (New Years Day). A good job for the Sunday. Well. It will be a good job for a couple of Sundays!

There is a fence at the back of the garden. It is not high. Made of wire-netting. and apart from that there is this green netting to keep the weeds at its place. Well. It’s holding things at its place. On both sides of the netting large bundles of rootstocks, as we know them from the jasmine. Meters and meters long and very strong (I measured lengths of up to 15 m.!). There are a lot of (interesting) shrubs along the fence. Closely packed together (needs thinning!) and the jasmine tends to climb in some of the shrubs already. And then there are roses. That makes the work such a pleasant job. I’m sorry to say that I have cut some of these roses back. They grew in the shadow.

I’m quite sure the jasmine is Jasminum polyanthum

Find photo’s I made in Kevin’s Bush and take some new ones.

Worked a third hour. Did today 10 m. of the total length of 15 of the garden. To be continued next week(end).

It was a sunny day, with thin clouds covering most of the sky in the morning. As the day went on the clouds became thinner and the sun hotter. No wind.

Today: Kevin’s Bush

Worked all day in Kevin’s Bush: continuing the battle against the creeping and climbing jasmine.

in the morning:
1/2 hour mowing with the old Jonsered scrubcutter (fuel tank is empty after half an hour!) (new Shindaiwo is still at the shop – till Sunday).
1 hour with the rake.
1 hour with the spade.

in the afternoon:
1 hour spraying: third tank with round-up – bit along the fence; along the track and on the “working-track” halfway between the two tracks.
1/2 hour mowing with light Husqvarna scrubcutter.
1/2 hour mowing at the beginning of the Ridge: Digitalis, thistles and a few rushes.

A grey and coldish day.

20080101 Tuesday

Worked a bit in Isobel’s garden.

Creeping jasmine must be cut out of the hedge at the back!

Brought a wheelbarrow of garden-rubbish to the compost-bin.

Checked the second compost-bin. It does well. It gets really hot inside. Good structure. Good colour. Turned a part of the first heap around and dumped good stuff into the second bin. First bin is doing well. It gets hot and I saw some worms!

Carried 5 wheelbarrows of compost from the rubbish dump to the compost-bin. Four in 1st bin, one into the second.

Wheelbarrow has a flat tyre!

Broadband connection down from about noon.
